Newspaper Microfilm Digitisation
In short: Micrographics Data digitises Singapore newspaper titles from microfilm dating back to 1845 and supplies high-resolution copies of individual pages or articles. Order a full page or a single article, each quoted per item, with express handling available. Because the content is the publisher’s copyright, you must obtain permission from the publisher for your intended use before scans can be released.
Used by academic researchers, law firms, journalists, heritage projects and family historians tracing a published record.
Who orders newspaper copies, and why
What you are doing with the copy decides whether you need a full page or a single article — and whether you need express service.
Academic research
University researchers and postgraduates citing contemporary press coverage.
The surrounding page gives the context a citation needs — adjacent reporting, date furniture, placement.
Legal and due diligence
Law firms and investigators evidencing what was published and when.
Full-page capture shows the item in its published setting; express meets filing deadlines.
Journalism and publishing
Journalists, authors and documentary producers reproducing a historical item.
Cropped and cleaned for reproduction — with publisher permission for the intended use.
Family and heritage research
Family historians and heritage projects tracing announcements, obituaries and photographs.
Titles run back to 1845, covering births, deaths, marriages and local reporting.

How an order is quoted
Every item is quoted individually, and quotations exclude any permission or licence fee payable to the publisher. We confirm the item is held and quote before any work begins.
Government agencies, statutory boards and public universities procure through GeBIZ, where Micrographics Data is a registered supplier. Tender-ready specifications and compliance statements are supplied on request.
One item, or the whole run?
This service supplies copies of individual items. If you hold your own newspaper microfilm — a title, a corporate run, an institutional collection — converting the whole run on production scanners with OCR is a different and far cheaper proposition per page.

What is the Singapore newspaper microfilm digitisation service?
A copy-ordering service. Micrographics Data holds Singapore newspaper titles on microfilm from 1845 onward and scans the specific page or article you need at high resolution, delivering a digital file. It is for researchers, lawyers, journalists, family historians and students who need a particular published item, not a bulk licence to the archive.
Do I need permission from the publisher?
Yes. The newspaper content remains the publisher’s copyright. You must obtain permission from the publisher for your intended use before we can release scans. We digitise and supply the copy; the publisher grants the right to use it.
How far back does the microfilm go?
To 1845 — the earliest Singapore newspaper titles held on our microfilm. That covers the full run of the English-language press and other Singapore newspaper titles through to the modern period.
What does it cost?
Full-page and per-article copies are both quoted per item, with express handling quoted at a higher rate than normal service. A courier charge applies where a physical copy is required. Quotations are per item and exclude any publisher permission or licence fee.
What is the difference between "full page" and "per article"?
Full page delivers the entire newspaper page as published, with surrounding content and context. Per article delivers just the item you need, cropped and cleaned. Researchers citing context usually want the full page; per-article is for reproduction.
How fast is the express service?
Express is prioritised ahead of the normal queue. Turnaround depends on how precisely the citation is known — an exact date, title and page number is far faster than a search. Contact us with your citation for a current turnaround estimate.
What if I do not know the exact date or page?
Tell us what you do know — approximate date, event, names, title. Searching microfilm is manual work, so a wide window costs time; the National Library Board’s newspaper indexes are often the fastest way to pin a citation before ordering.
Can you digitise our own newspaper or microfilm collection?
Yes — that is our core business. Our microfilm scanning service converts entire runs of newspaper microfilm to digital with OCR on NextScan production scanners, and we microfilm original newspapers for preservation. This service supplies copies from the newspaper titles held on microfilm in our vault.
Send us the citation — title, date and page
We confirm the item is held, quote the exact cost, and tell you what publisher permission your use requires.
