35mm slides and negatives are among the most at-risk formats in any photographic or heritage collection. Slide mounts crack, cellulose acetate negatives suffer "vinegar syndrome," colour dyes fade unevenly, and both formats become unreadable the moment the last compatible projector or light table fails. Why Standard Scanning Isn't Enough

A flatbed document scanner or an office multifunction printer is built to capture flat, opaque paper — not a 24mm × 36mm transparent original that depends on a precisely calibrated backlight and a much higher optical resolution to render sharp detail. Slides and negatives also carry image information across their entire dynamic range, from deep shadow to bright highlight, that a standard reflective scan clips or crushes. Dedicated film-scanning equipment reads light through the film rather than reflecting off it, capturing the full tonal range the original photographer or archivist recorded.

Our Scanning Process

1. Intake, Condition Assessment & Cataloguing

Every slide and negative is logged against a manifest before handling begins. Mount type, visible damage (mould, cracked glass, curling, "vinegar syndrome" odour), and any existing captions or numbering are recorded so nothing is lost or reordered during the project.

2. Cleaning & Preparation

Surface dust and debris are removed using anti-static brushes and compressed air before scanning — the single biggest factor in how much manual dust-spotting a digitisation project needs afterward. Fragile or damaged mounts are handled with powder-free gloves and, where necessary, carefully re-housed in archival-safe sleeves.

3. High-Resolution Film Scanning

Scanning is performed on dedicated film-scanning equipment at resolutions suited to the intended use — typically 3000-5000 dpi for slides and negatives destined for enlargement, print or long-term archival preservation, and lower resolutions for access/reference copies. Both automated batch-feed scanning (for large, uniform collections) and individual manual scanning (for fragile, damaged or high-value originals) are available.

4. Colour Correction & Restoration

Colour transparency film — Kodachrome and Ektachrome especially — is prone to dye fading and colour shifts (commonly toward red or magenta) as it ages. Our operators apply colour-balance correction during capture and, where a collection calls for it, targeted post-processing restoration to bring faded images back toward their original appearance without over-processing or losing authenticity.

5. Quality Control

Every scanned image is checked for focus, colour accuracy, orientation, dust and scratch artefacts, and completeness against the original manifest before delivery.

6. Indexing & Metadata

Scanned images can be indexed and named to match existing slide-tray or negative-sleeve numbering, catalogued against institutional finding aids, or delivered with embedded IPTC/XMP metadata (date, subject, location, photographer) where that information is available.

File Formats & Delivery

  • Archival master: uncompressed or lossless TIFF, or JPEG2000
  • Access copies: JPEG at a resolution matched to intended use (web, print, presentation)
  • PDF/A for indexed, searchable collection sets
  • Delivery via Direct File Transfer (VPN), encrypted hard disk/USB, or upload to your existing digital asset management (DAM) system

Return, Storage & Disposal

Original slides and negatives are returned to you exactly as received unless you request otherwise. For institutional and heritage clients we also offer secure long-term cold storage for originals, or secure destruction with a certificate of disposal once digitisation is verified and accepted.
